It is known as the second largest city of Alsace, after Strasbourg. Back in the days, it used to be a free imperial city. It lies between the Black Forest and the Vognes, being traversed by the rivers Rhine-Rhone Canal and Doller. The main attractions in Mulhouse are Atkirch, the old capital of Sundgau, the Eco Museum of Alsace, an open-air museum, and its vast number of zoological museums.
